WHAT IS YOUR FOUNDATION?... The First Step to Creating Balance in your Life

Before Balance comes Foundation

Welcome to May! As y'all know, this month we are focusing on Balancing Emotions Naturally. We'll be discussing which tools to use for emotional support, especially crystals and essential oils, and also what mental exercises are most helpful. But before I delve into all that I want to make sure we start of on the right foot, or better yet start out with our foot on the right ground.

Let me ask you a question: How can you achieve balance in life without knowing and trusting the Foundation on which you stand?

How can you achieve Balance without knowing the Foundation on which you stand?

How can you achieve Balance without knowing the Foundation on which you stand?

Many people build a foundation on Religion, some on a career or life calling, some on their family. But these foundations are too broad, vague, and changeable to support you in the worst, most stressful situations. Saying I'm held up by the earth doesn't work if you fall of a cliff. The idea of"The Earth" is too big and multi-dimensional to do you much good in that situation.

Over the past few years I personally struggled with this. I had a foundation of "Family" and "Christian values." But when these two foundations came into direct conflict it took me 5 years to decide what was really most important to me, keeping a family together or living based on everything I'd been taught my whole life. That traumatic situation had one truly positive outcome. I am so much more clear today on what I truly believe, what is important to me, and the fact that MY values are the only ones I'm responsible for.

So if things like Family, Love, Christianity, Success, Sustainability, etc. are all too broad and vague, what should you chose for a foundation?

CHOOSE PERSONAL PRINCIPLES.

Every decision you make is based on a foundation of principles, whether you realize it or not.

Every decision you make is based on a foundation of principles, whether you realize it or not.

What are Principles? They are the deepest values that bring meaning and purpose to your life. These are NON-NEGOTIABLE when it comes to making tough decisions. They can be based on faith or your life calling, etc., but the MUST BE SPECIFIC!

They must be applicable to daily life and appropriate for handling the curveballs life throws at you. What if you get asked to take on a huge wholesale order right before a planned family vacation, or your boss asks you to stay late on your weekly date-night. You might be tempted to make that decision based on money or based on the disappointment of your loved ones. But you should really be making the decision based on your personal principles. You have to live with the result. Make sure it is the result that you choose and believe is right.

I watched a YouTube clip this morning, where a comedian told a story about getting caught up in a train robbery with the Russian Mafia, during a college study-abroad trip. He mentioned that, when asked to help with the robbery, he expected to say no. "For example," he said, "I know I would never cheat on my wife because I have had that conversation with myself, and I decided it's not worth it to ever ruin my relationship and family happiness." [paraphrase] But he'd never had a conversation with himself about robbing a train, so he found himself saying, "Yeah! Let's rob my friends first!"

But he'd never had a conversation with himself about robbing a train, so he found himself saying, "Yeah! Let's rob my friends first!"

But he'd never had a conversation with himself about robbing a train, so he found himself saying, "Yeah! Let's rob my friends first!"

So his excuse for that dumb decision was that he had no specific foundation on which to make a "right" choice. Imagine if he had taken the time, even at that young age, to decide he valued other people and their personal property. That he would live off what he earned and even give back the extra to those in need. This is not saying "I will never rob a train with the Russian Mafia," but it would definitely be a good foundation for making that tough, in-the-moment decision.

So how does this apply to you? Why am I starting out the month of May and our focus in Balancing Emotions by telling you to think about your principles?

it's because I have a CHALLENGE for you!

order from the menu

Within the next few days, I want you to make a list of your deepest held values and the things in life that are most important to you. The NON-NEGOTIABLES. This will be you Personal Mission Statement, or as a friend recently described it to me.... your Life Menu

If you create a detailed menu of your beliefs, values, and goals, then all you have to do each day is order from that menu. If something isn't on the menu, Move On. Do Not Engage.

Take an example: You believe that a positive mindset is KEY to a happy life. Someone starts yelling at you for screwing up at work, or a customer leaves you a bad product review. Handle the situation gracefully and disengage as soon as possible. This situation, and often this person, are not on your menu.

THE CHALLENGE: Create a list of your deepest beliefs, strongest convictions, and everything good you want to create in your life.

THE CHALLENGE: Create a list of your deepest beliefs, strongest convictions, and everything good you want to create in your life.

Do you see the POWER in that?! Do you understand how this exercise can help you create balance and promote calm, positive emotions?

GOOD! So here's what I want you to do.. Make a list, broken into a few categories: MIND/BODY/SPIRT or HOME/WORK/PLAY, whatever makes the most sense to you. Then create a list of your deepest beliefs, strongest convictions, and everything good you want to create in your life. Make sure they are specific enough to answer in everyday situations. Work on your list until you feel it is complete.

Hang it on your wall and look at it every day this month. Then let me know how it works! I'll be checking in with y'all during the LIVE workshops, so if you haven't signed up yet, here's the link: lulamaydesign.com/signup

Let's have an AWESOME, BALANCED month of May!
