Today is November 7th which is late for an Intention Setting, but we've already gotten started this week with our focus on Boosting Energy and Increasing Efficiency.
First thing we did was look at where we are Leaking Energy and how we can plug those leaks. Tip # 5 was Prioritize. This is what I want to focus on today.
How can you make your to do list work FOR YOU and not suck up all your extra time?
Here's the honest truth: You choose how you spend your energy. It's your responsibility to choose wisely.
Any time you spend placing judgement on people, things or circumstance is Energy Spent. Stress is Energy Spent. Did you want to expend that energy or was it really a waste? Not only that, but you only have 24 hours in a day so how do you make sure the important stuff is getting done?
It's time to veer away from conventional wisdom.
Most coaches will tell you to "put the important stuff first" or get more specific and explain all about the 4 part grid of Important/Urgent, Unimportant/Not Urgent etc.
From a small business perspective, it really makes more sense to say, "What is my bottom line?"
1. What is my bare minimum?
2. What creates success?
3. What will help my business (and life) grow?
Realistically you have to take care of your Minimums or success and growth are worthless! (the old saying about "lipstick on a pig" comes to mind here) During November and December this is even more important because your time is constrained and you have a lot more "basic work" than usual (filling orders customer service, etc.)
So..... How can you prioritize your life better by using this simple 3 part list?
FIRST divide your life into categories (Yes I know they all flow into each other, but go with me on this for a minute)
Let's say you decide to divide into Business / Family / Health. Now for each of these what is your minimum, success, and growth? Create these lists and stick to them!
Post them where you can see them. BE REALISTIC.
Let's face it. You can't be growing in every of life all the time, no matter how much you wish that were true. Some things will stay at a minimum for a while, but that will allow you to not lose too much ground while you focus on other parts of your life.
EXAMPLE TIME. The easiest example of this is Health and Business. During the busy season it's harder to take time for preparing and eating healthy meals. If you get to a space where that's simply not possible for every meal, ask yourself, "What is my bare minimum? How many unhealthy meals can my body take before I compromise my health and risk weight gain, weakened immunity, exhaustion, headaches, etc?" STICK TO THAT MINIMUM. If you sink below that you will start to effect multiple areas of life, not just your health. But you don't need to beat yourself up for grabbing a fast food meal once a week, if that's what it takes to get everything else accomplished. Does that make sense?
We will talk throughout the month about increasing energy and streamlining processes. This will help you to automate some of your minimums and make more room for success and growth.
But for now, it's a huge step forward just to know where everything falls onto your list! This way you don't spend hours working on something from your Growth list to realize at midnight that you haven't taken care of one of the minimums.... so you just stay up through the night and lose sleep.
This is not the way it has to be! Put everything in it's place. Don't lose sight of what HAS to get done. Get it done quickly and efficiently, then move onto the success and growth aspects of your life.
Tune in throughout the week in the Creativity Club as we delve deeper into how to write these lists.
•How to get everything on them •How to not overestimate your time and energy •How to improve your energy and efficiency one day at a time!
This is going to be our best month yet!
